What is an Unconference?

For those who haven’t attended an unconference before, no need to be concerned. An unconference is a new type of conference, where the participants set the agenda, topics and speakers on the day. It’s based on the following premise (the ‘Fundamental Law of Conventional Conferences‘):

The sum of the expertise of the people in the audience is greater than the sum of expertise of the people on stage.

Each afternoon of the conference, we will gather together and people will suggest their own sessions (2-3 sessions are run in parallel). The sessions might be a discussion about their organisation, service or campaign; a facilitated conversation about a question or issue; a place to “pick someone’s brain”; a session to develop a resource; a meditation session; or more. Anything goes! There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, and the focus is on having engaging, collaborative sessions rather than didactic sessions. Some people may have small parts prepared, others might come up with the idea (or meet a co-presenter) on the day.

Who is behind the conference?

The conference is being organised by Dialogue Consulting, a specialist social media consultancy with a focus on building capacity from within organisations to build, manage and analyse social media communities. We’ve worked with a number of youth organisations, and many of our clients and workshop attendees have expressed a desire for someone to bring together both the online communications and youth sectors to collaborate and brainstorm opportunities for the future.
